Frequently Asked Questions
How far back does the archive go?
We provide a complete daily archive for the past 90 days. Each daily page reconstructs the full set of magnitude 2.5+ earthquakes recorded by USGS that day, with the largest event highlighted and a magnitude breakdown. For older events, search the USGS catalog directly at earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/search.
What earthquakes are included in each daily page?
Each day's page lists all earthquakes globally with magnitude 2.5 or higher recorded by USGS between 00:00 and 23:59 UTC of that day. Smaller earthquakes (M<2.5) are usually only detected by local networks and aren't routinely included in the global feed.
Why might a magnitude in the archive differ from what I saw on the day?
USGS revises preliminary magnitudes as more seismograph data arrives, often within minutes to hours. Our archive pages display the latest reviewed value from USGS, which may differ slightly from the initial automated estimate shown on the live feed. The reviewed value is the authoritative scientific record.
