Frequently asked questions about the live earthquake map

How often does the map update?

The map reloads the USGS feed every 5 minutes. New events typically appear within 1–5 minutes of being added to the USGS catalog. The page itself revalidates every 5 minutes via Next.js ISR.

What earthquakes are shown?

By default, magnitude 2.5 and above worldwide for the past 24 hours, sourced from the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program. Use the magnitude and time-range filters in the top-left to expand or narrow the view. Smaller earthquakes (M<2.5) are typically only detected by local networks and aren't routinely included in the global feed.

Why don't I see a recent earthquake I felt?

USGS adds events to the public feed once they pass automated quality checks, usually 1–5 minutes after detection. Very small or very recent events may not yet be on the map. Reviewed magnitudes can also differ from initial automated estimates as more seismograph data arrives.

Is this map a substitute for an early-warning system?

No. Early-warning systems like USGS ShakeAlert deliver warnings seconds before shaking arrives via dedicated channels (cell broadcast, partner apps). This map shows earthquakes that have already happened and is for informational use only.
